The ward councillor for the Goulds is offering assurances that action will be taken when it comes to the scourge that is Cochrane Pond Park.
Donnie Earle told VOCM Open Line guest host Darrin Bent that work is underway to address the issue.
Public safety concerns related to criminal activity and squatters in the derelict park have been growing for years.
Despite an order to vacate issued by the capital city last year, people remain at the site, and a series of fires in the park in recent weeks have only heightened concerns about the threat posed to nearby neighbourhoods like Southlands, Galway and the Goulds.
Earle says officials are keeping their cards close to their chest for the time being, but says action is coming.
“We are working very hard behind the scenes,” says Earle, “with the provincial government, the city, the RNC and St. John’s Regional Fire Department. We are going to get this right…we just need a bit of time to figure it out.”
He says “Cochrane Pond is high on our radar and we will get it done, and we will get it right.”
