The leader of the official opposition believes the province is “back to square one” when it comes to its quest for greater equalization payments from the federal government.
John Hogan was responding to comments made by Finance Minister Craig Pardy, who said the Premier will raise the issue during the meeting of the Council of the Federation in PEI this week.
Pardy also classified the current formula as “unfair,” especially given that the province’s population is so spread out geographically.
Hogan says it is “funny” that Pardy would make those statements, because earlier this year the PCs walked away from a court action against the federal government in which the Liberals were making those exact points.
He says government had the chance to make those arguments in court, and calls Pardy’s comments on the matter “disingenuous” when they stopped the legal action.
