Fisheries officers patrolling the northeast coast have charged three people who have a taste for salmon, and confiscated property used to catch them.
Officers from Springdale, Baie Verte and Massey Drive detachments joined in a surveillance operation in Westport, noticing a net set in coastal waters which appeared to be targeting Atlantic salmon. Not only did they arrest two people from the community, but they seized a boat, motor, and three gill nets totaling over 500 feet in length.
The two will appear in court in Grand Falls-Windsor on charges of netting Atlantic salmon during a closed time without a licence.
Wildlife enforcement personnel also arrested a person in Paddock’s Bight in a similar situation, confiscating the boat, motor, 100-ft. gill net, and two salmon. They have additionally been charged with obstructing a fishery officer.
