The mayor of Labrador City says his community will need more funding and resources if government plans to attract more industry under a deal on hydro development.
The deal will see a third transmission line built to feed Labrador West, something the mining industry and municipal officials have been calling for for some time.
Mayor Jordan Brown says that’s good news, but he fears without proper resources from the provincial government for infrastructure expansion, his community could be left behind.
“It’s going to have to come with commitment from the provincial government on helping us expand.” He said, “part of the reason we can’t expand at the rate we want to, is (because) we need more electricity. We need to have access to provincial funding in order to build houses, to build infrastructure and stuff to support these workers and to help grow our region for the long-term jobs that comes with these projects. Unfortunately, we were kicked out of the multi-year capital works (funding) in the past budget, so it really tied our hands on expanding our municipality.”
