A suspicious fire last night at a heritage structure in Placentia was knocked down before further damage could spread through the building.
RCMP were contacted shortly after 8:00 p.m. about a fire at the former St. Luke’s Anglican Church.
Police say the fire was fully extinguished by volunteer firefighters before it could spread throughout the building which is now being used as a cultural heritage centre.

Although the church was built at the turn of the last century, its history dates back as far as 1689.
Among those who helped to fund the construction of a previous church at the site was Prince William Henry, (later King William IV) who was stationed in Placentia in 1786.
The Provincial Fire Commissioner’s Office has been contacted and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
