Premier Tony Wakeham says he shares in the federal government’s disappointment that France has signaled its intention to launch an exploratory snow crab fishery on the extension of Canada’s continental shelf.
The province says that action is not within France’s authority.
Premier Wakeham has spoken with federal fisheries minister and Newfoundland MP Joanne Thompson in support of the province’s fishery.
Wakeham says Thompson made it clear that the federal government does not support the decision by France, “and never will.”
He says the province will work with Ottawa to safeguard the “critical” fishing industry.
