A business owner in Mount Pearl is calling attention to the dangers associated with kids riding motorized and pedal bikes through his parking lot after a teenager crashed on the weekend, leaving him in hospital.
Justin French, the owner of French’s Automotive on Park Avenue, says they have traffic of all types, including big trucks, moving through the lot day and night.
French posted a video of an incident Sunday in which a teenager was hurt after one of the wheels separated from his bike.
“He has multiple stitches in his face, he broke some teeth and his face is swollen – and that’s a terrible thing to see. But it could have been much worse as he was very close to going through the glass door,” French told VOCM Open Line with Brian Callahan. “I don’t care about the building – that can be fixed, but what about the person.”
French says a lot of people and vehicles use that parking lot either to access the business or as a shortcut, and bicycles and e-bikes do not mix well against cars and trucks.
“It creates this whole scenario with somebody saying ‘we’re responsible’ even though we’re not. And when somebody gets hurt, it’s not a good situation for anyone.”
