It was a busy day yesterday outside of 91 Brazil Street as tenants removed their belongings from the building, which had been shut down by the city of St. John’s.
City inspectors, accompanied by RNC, paid a visit to the 50-unit structure last week and this week residents were issued with a 24-hour notice to vacate the premises.
The city says the building was closed due to “life-safety” concerns.
Melissa Curtis, whose fiancee lives in the building, says it should have been shut down months ago.
“It was full of mould, several floors (are) full of bedbugs…you couldn’t drink the water, all you could drink when you were drinking the water was literally, rust.”
She says most of the people who lived there are being placed in emergency shelters, and that’s a problem for those who have pets.
Reuben Doiron who had been living in the building for the last five years, has one message to government;
“I’d say they should just tear this place down, because if they don’t, everything’s got a habit of repeating itself.”
There were only 14 rent-paying tenants living in the building.
