Memorial University says it’s made what it calls “meaningful” progress in addressing recommendations made by the Auditor General on university operations.
The AG raised issues in two previous reports – in 2023 and 2025.
Last January, Denise Hanrahan highlighted MUN’s deferred maintenance liabilities of $481 million. She said at the time the university had “not effectively or efficiently” managed its capital portfolio.
She also raised concerns about a lack of oversight within the administration and found that MUN’s facilities were “poor and nearing critical” condition.
In an article in The Gazette, the university says it has implemented 62 per cent of the AG’s recommendations and another 27 per cent are in the process of being met.
It says demolishing Coughlan College has saved $8.4 million in deferred maintenance costs, and it has also done significant work on its underground tunnel system.
Several policies have also been updated, including ones concerning oversight of the university and its condition.
