CAA Atlantic is putting the push on to allow LED signs to be used on tow trucks to warn traffic to slow down and move over.
Today is National Slow Down, Move Over Day – a time to remind drivers to give people who work on roads and highways the space to do their jobs safely.
There are already move over laws in place in Newfoundland and Labrador, yet police and construction workers still report close calls and times when they haven’t felt safe doing their jobs.
Julia Kent of CAA Atlantic says use of the signs has been found to be very effective according to research conducted by CAA’s American affiliate, AAA.
“You’ve probably seen these signs on highways or construction (sites;) you can buy these LED signs that display directional arrows or a very clear safety message like ‘slow down’ or ‘move over.’”
“We explicitly want the governments to allow them on the back of tow trucks.” She says AAA found that the use of the signs was 95 per cent more effective at getting people to slow down and move over.
