Airport Heights has had more than its share of construction woes over the past few years with the installation of two roundabouts in the area, and will now see several dozen townhouses being built on Airport Heights Drive.
City council, voted 6-5 to allow approximately 60 homes in the neighbourhood last night.
Two rezoning motions were required to increase housing density – but some, including Ward Councillor Jill Bruce, were concerned about snow removal. Snow had to be trucked out of the area last year in what was a particularly snowy winter season.
Deputy Mayor Ron Ellsworth says that scenario is unlikely to repeat itself on any consistent basis. As well, given that the houses will be single units, most, if not all, would be owner-occupied.
“I do hear the ward councillor’s concerns” says Ellsworth. He says using last winter as an example, “we all know we got dumped on…this happens once every five or six years.” He says they have different requirements for snow clearing in higher elevations and he supports the project.
