The Department of Tourism says it will be working with Memorial to gain a better understanding on the university’s plans to divest itself of the Johnson GEO Centre, a popular tourist destination on Signal Hill.
Memorial announced plans earlier this year to divest itself of a number of properties – including its Harlow campus and the GEO Centre.
Since then there’s been little in the way of updates on the process.
The GEO Centre could close in April of next year if it’s not sold or transferred.
Minister Mike Goosney says government understands that attractions like the Johnson GEO Centre play an important role in showcasing the province and providing educational opportunities for families and visitors.
He says government is willing to work with MUN to see if there’s an opportunity to “work together to preserve its role” as a valued tourism attraction.
