The City of St. John’s is working with the provincial government on action to address public safety in the metro region.
Mayor Danny Breen wrote the federal and provincial governments back in August seeking a collaborative approach to addressing open drug use, discarded needles, vandalism and other serious public safety concerns.
The mayor says the Justice Minister joined him on a recent tour of the downtown, speaking with business owners about what they’re seeing and experiencing.
A group made up of representatives of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, the city, and various government departments has been formed to address issues facing the city and the entire province.
He says while the issues remain, he’s hopeful new initiatives will be included in the upcoming provincial budget.
“It’s positive, we continue the discussions, and continue to move forward and we hope to have further commentary later this year.”
