It’s throwback night at the Mary Brown’s Centre tonight as the Newfoundland Regiment hosts Moncton at 7:00, a time to reflect on the St. John’s Maple Leafs, who called St. John’s home for 14 years.
Fans are encouraged to wear anything emblematic of the era at tonight’s game.
Glenn Stanford, who ran the Leafs and IceCaps and is now President and CEO of the Regiment, says support from community is everything when it comes to having a successful team.
He gets a little upset when somebody asks ‘why can’t you keep a hockey team here?’
Stanford says the Leafs had a pretty good run at it, calling St. John’s home for 14 years.
“That’s a pretty good run, and they left not because of anything here, but because the NHL was moving farm teams closer to the parent city,” says Stanford.
“Same thing for the IceCaps. This is a hockey town and we have proven that as the IceCaps sold out every night for three-and-a-half years.”
The two teams clash again tomorrow night at 7:00.
