The MHA for St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi has written the minister of justice to suggest a collaborative approach to examining how restorative justice can help to reduce pressure on the court system “while building safer communities.”
Sheilagh O’Leary was responding to Helen Conway Ottenheimer’s recent trip to Ontario where she explored innovative court systems in place in Kenora and London.
O’Leary, who hosted a panel discussion on restorative justice in the spring, says she was encouraged to hear the minister speaking about the need to reduce the number of repeat offenders tying up the court system.
