A children’s injury prevention expert is encouraging parents to make sure their child’s helmet is properly fitted before heading out on their bikes and scooters.
Katherine Hutka says injuries related to those activities are common in the summer months, which makes it very important not only to wear a helmet – but to make sure it is on properly.
Hutka says every helmet should be properly fitted and appropriate for the sport. She says users should follow the “2V1” rule.
She says people should only be able to put two fingers between their eyebrows and their helmet, the straps should be in a V shape around their ears, and they should only be able to fit one finger under their chin strap. Hutka also urges people to strap their helmets up, noting that she sees many teens going around with the straps undone.
