The Terms of Reference for a land use report on a piece of property in the centre of St. John’s for the development of several apartment buildings has been accepted by council.
Emerald Atlantic Group has applied to change the zoning on Rickett’s Road, the site of the former Holy Cross Junior High, from institutional to residential apartment.
The proposed development calls for 13 three-storey buildings with a total of about 400 or 500 units.
Councillor Brenda Halley, the lead for housing, says the need for such accommodations is significant as some people cannot find a suitable place to lay their head.
She says people in the area are concerned about a piece of that land which they use as a skate park, however she has assurances from the developer that kids will not lose access.
“The developer has said that they will not remove the skate park,” says Co. Halley.
