With local calls for relief on home heating costs, a new national survey shows that up to one-third of respondents say the cost of electricity is among the biggest impacts on household finances.
Not surprisingly, the high cost of food and gasoline top the financial pressures faced by respondents, but electricity was named as the top concern of 29 per cent of those asked.
Margaret Chapman of Narrative Research says the overwhelming majority of respondents are feeling the pinch.
“A large group, most people are really feeling that their expenses are growing, their discretionary spending, the amount of money they have for ‘fun stuff’ is shrinking, as costs go up and their income is not matching.”
Provincial finance minister Craig Pardy has hinted that affordability measures may be forthcoming this fall.
