Opposition House Leader Lisa Dempster is questioning the timing of a major cabinet shuffle held yesterday.
The premier says the changes were made as the province works toward finalizing a deal with Quebec and Ottawa on hydro development in Labrador.
Dempster questioned whether the province is trying to deflect from some of the criticism leveled around the new deal.
“We’ve gotten a lot of feedback on that,” says Dempster, “not the least of which is the broken promise, the referendum, that (Premier Wakeham) ran on, talked about it when he was minutes into the premier portfolio ‘any government that I lead will go back to the people on a deal this substantive.’ that didn’t happen.”
“Then to shuffle the cabinet….is that to deflect? I don’t know.”
The NDP’s Jim Dinn also finds the timing suspicious.
“It give the impression maybe that they’re trying to bury the changes. Who knows? As one constituent said to me ‘it’s pretty sneaky to make this announcement this week.’”
