Social media was abuzz with photos last night following reports of the formation of a potential funnel cloud over the metro region.
Some weather specialists shared photos of the unusual phenomenon to social media, identifying it as a shelf cloud rather than a funnel cloud.
Environment Canada meteorologist David Neil says it appears that the cloud formation was associated with an area of showers that was moving through.
He says this particular instance likely had something to do with the air ahead of the system being warm, and the air above it being relatively cold. He does admit that the cloud did look “rather ominous.”
