The provincial government is expanding access to RSV vaccines to all children under the age of 6 months, and all adults older than 75.
The expanded coverage was first announced in the 2026 budget, with nearly $4-million set aside for it.
That means that people in those age groups can get the vaccine free of charge. For infants, it will be offered to them before they leave the hospital.
Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says parents who did not get their child vaccinated in hospital can contact their local public health office to arrange an appointment.
That said, she states that the best course of action is for the shot to be administered in hospital.
She says the RSV vaccine works immediately, unlike others that can take a few weeks to fully kick in.
Fitzgerald says there will be several options for those 75 and older to get their shot including through clinics that will be offered next week, pharmacies, and family physicians.
