“The Great 8” has announced he will retire from the NHL at the end of this season.
Forty-one-year-old Alex Ovechkin announced on social media this morning that this will be his last year in the North American circuit.
Drafted in 2004, Ovechkin holds the record for most regular-season career goals at 924, along with the record for the most 40-goal seasons by any player – in addition to nearly a dozen other titles.
Ovi was a key part of the Capitals’ 2018 run, winning his first Stanley Cup over the Vegas Golden Knights.
He says he plans to spend his last year making it special with his family and the fans.
