The newly acclaimed President of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association says policing has changed dramatically in recent years and any new collective agreement reached with government needs to reflect that.
Constable Shane McClafferty was acclaimed to replace former RNCA president Staff Sergeant Mike Summers for a three-year term.
McClafferty says with contract negotiations about to get underway, the concerns they have go beyond compensation. He says they’re looking at ways to help support the membership, maintain a work-life balance and keep officers in the force.
He says investigations are getting more complex, with an increase in judicial authorisations “which means more warrants and production orders for members.” McClafferty says they’ve had a number of resignations over the last couple of years, and “that’s concerning.” He says the association’s focus will be on retaining the members they have and recruiting “good calibre candidates.”
