The MHA for Bell Island is concerned about a fuel shortage on the island.
Its only gas station has been without fuel for more than a week, and the owners are currently in negotiations with the provider to try to resolve the situation.
The station reopened in July of last year after nearly two months without fuel following a change in ownership.
MHA Fred Hutton says he’s been in contact with various government departments to find a solution to get gas and diesel back on the island.
“The thing that concerns me the most about all this is that despite the fact that from the shore in Portugal Cove you can see Bell Island, essentially they’re isolated,” Hutton says.
“When it comes to emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks and police vehicles over there for the RCMP, and if you’ve got to get on a ferry and spend, half an hour waiting and then 20 minutes getting over, getting your fuel and getting back, if something happens while those vehicles are gone, that’s going to be problematic.”
