One of the top goaltenders in the NHL is headed to the east coast in a blockbuster trade which involves Bay Roberts native Dawson Mercer.
Connor Hellebuyck, who helped the St. John’s Ice Caps to the Calder Cup final, has won Vezina trophies, and backstopped the United States to a gold medal at the Olympics last winter with a memorable performance.
He hasn’t played all season due to a dispute with the Winnipeg Jets, but today the Jets shipped him to New Jersey for Mercer, Alexander Command, Nick Bjugstad, and goaltender Nico Daws.
Mercer won gold with Team Canada at the World Juniors in 2020, followed by a couple of silver medals.
He has yet to score this season, but has over 100 goals in his NHL career.
