Mount Pearl says it’s not closing the door on beekeeping in the city, but council has rejected an application for two beehives in a heavy residential area after an incident last summer which some saw as terrifying.
The applicant, whose hives are on a residential property on Kean Place off Sunrise Avenue, made his case to keep the bees at the last meeting of council, acknowledging that the swarm from one of the hives was scary.
All members of council, including Isabelle Fry, voted against allowing the activity.
She lives close by and jumped in her car to see the swarm.
“I saw the swarm on a tree on the front lawn of a neighbouring property, and it was terrifying,” Coun. Fry said.
Mayor Dave Aker encouraged the keeper to work with staff should he decide to reapply in future.
“Even though the logic is that beekeeping is relatively safe, we all see it as very scary, and that’s the essential issue behind it – fear.”
