Accessing proper health care has been a hot topic on the Burin Peninsula for some time with no doctor or nurse practitioner available in St. Lawrence, while the clinic in Grand Bank is also lacking staff.
Area MHA Paul Pike says the PCs promised full staffing at both facilities during the election campaign and sought answers from government on keeping that promise.
Health Minister Joedy Wall says he has spoken with Pike about what’s needed in the area and government is “working through” that.
Meanwhile, the MHA for Fortune Bay-Cape LaHune says residents of his district are facing a similar situation with a shortage of long-term care beds that’s limiting access to acute care beds.
Minister Wall says he’s committed to addressing that issue as well.
He says government recognises the impact long-term care patients filling acute care beds is having on the health care system and is working with NLHS to “ensure the right numbers” across the province and in the district.
