A new childcare centre is being opened up in the old Costco building on Stavanger Drive, with the children of health care workers getting priority access to a space.
In recent years that facility has been transformed into the Unity Health Centre, which includes things like ambulatory care and urgent care.
Now, a daycare with up to 72 spaces will be established at the site and run by the YWCA.
About $1-million from the federal and provincial governments has been set aside for the project.
Health Minister Joedy Wall believes the new centre will “certainly” help with recruitment and retention of health care workers. He hopes that other similar facilities can be opened.
He says he would “love to see that,” and is open to working with the department of education and the federal government on that front.
