The President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture says the rising cost of diesel has become one of the toughest things farmers are facing.
Wayne Simmons, who owns a dairy farm on the west coast, says the rising costs are affecting nearly every facet of their day-to-day operations.
Last month, one farmer told VOCM News that his bill for his dairy farm, which is in Cormack, reached upwards of $150-thousand.
Simmons says he’s hoping the federal budget will bring some relief.
“Everything a farmer does requires diesel, so everything is a tractor. Tractor pulls everything, so they burn fuel. Dairy farmers cut their hay, so they burn fuel. Spreading manure burns fuel, everything burns fuel,” he told reporters.
“Plus heating. Some buildings are heated with fuel, so it touches everything.”
The federal budget comes down tomorrow evening.
