The MHA for Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair has tabled a petition in the House of Assembly asking government to “take immediate steps” to construct a new school in Cartwright.
A previous contract for the work was cancelled by the current government back in June.
The company that was awarded the contract for the school and for the redevelopment of the Martin Gallant Building in Stephenville Crossing has filed Statements of Claim against government seeking damages for wrongful termination and repudiation of the contract. MHA Lisa Dempster says residents of the district need a new school.
She described the condition of the “old rundown school. When you see windows that are broken out, when you see kitchens that are not safe to be cooking in, when you see children that don’t have a gym to run and play in…”
Infrastructure Minister Barry Petten assures that a new school is coming.
“We’ve not turned our back on Cartwright. I would never turn my back on Cartwright. But I had to do what was in the best financial interest of the province…I felt $60 million for 50 children was not feasible. We are proceeding…but it will not be a $60 million school for 50-55 children. But it will be a new school that will be more than adequate.”
