The leader of the official opposition says he is “at a loss” as to why it took the Innu Nation so long to get a meeting with Premier Tony Wakeham.
Government says a meeting had already been arranged between the two parties for yesterday.
However, while the premier was speaking at a mining conference in St. John’s, Grand Chief Jodie Ashini took things one step further by publicly confronting the premier before the two sides went into a meeting.
Liberal leader John Hogan hopes that meeting went well.
That said, Hogan expresses concern about not receiving clear answers from government on if they will only move ahead with Churchill Falls if they have the support of the Innu Nation.
Hogan says Wakeham “failed” to answer the question when it was put to him, and underscores that the group “have” to be on board for the deal to move ahead.
NDP MHA Sheilagh O’Leary says it is “so unfortunate” to see the Innu Nation “dismissed and disrespected” by government.
She says there has been an “ample amount of time” to discuss the situation with the group, and they way things have unfolded is “so disrespectful” to members of the Innu Nation.
