A long-running sketch comedy TV show has received a write-up in the New York Times for its take on Canada-U.S. relations under Donald Trump.
The CBC’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes has been no stranger to poking fun at the testy relationship between the two nations. Most prominently, Newfoundland’s own Mark Critch has regularly played Trump in skits on the show.
Critch says he never expected to see his work get recognized in the New York Times.
“That’s the thing with the social media age,” says Critch. ” Something that it was one time very Canadian, or even very Atlantic Canadian, can easily be worldwide with just a click of a button.”
He likens looking at American politics from Canada to a “neighbour looking over the fence,” and believes that distance helps with writing comedy about it.
He says comedy is about observation, and he is not so embroiled in the issue that “passion takes over.” He says that allows him to be more analytical and see how “silly” things can be.
