A local financial advisor is applauding some of the business and economic growth initiatives announced in this year’s federal budget.
Larry Short of Short Financial, a branch of iA Private Wealth, says the $15-million exemption on capital gains is a big boost for investment.
He says Ottawa is investing in infrastructure, and what government believes are the industries of the future in dramatic fashion. He says some of the tax breaks are particularly interesting and calls the $15- million tax credit to encourage investment in certain sectors “huge.”
Meanwhile, the Federation of Labour is concerned with the business-focus of this year’s budget.
Jessica McCormick says it’s the most “pro-business” budget seen in quite some time. Of particular concern are the cuts to the public service – some 40,000 federal public service jobs are on the line.
She says the concern as public sector unions sit down with the provincial government to negotiate new collective agreements is that any cuts in the federal service could filter down to a provincial level.
