The CEO of the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce is promoting the benefits of companies looking to veterans to help fill job vacancies.
Last week, the federal government launched a new initiative to recognize employers that hire retired service members.
Rhonda Tulk-Lane says about 7,900 service members retire across the country every year, and of those about 50 per cent are looking for new careers.
She says someone who entered the armed forces straight out of high school has probably never had a civilian job interview and is wondering how their skills – which they practiced daily for 20 years, will be welcomed by employers.
Tulk-Lane says there are several things’ companies need to consider when looking at a veteran’s resume.
She says they need to take a close look at their skillset, and not just at the civilian job titles or degrees.
