Bay Roberts has gotten rid of what could have become a smelly mess on a beach near the rec centre.
The whale that became entangled in fishing gear deep in the ocean floated onto the beach in Back Cove, Spaniard’s Bay a few days ago, leaving the town in a conundrum. It was uncertain as to just how to get rid of the animal as leaving it to scavenger prey was not an option.
There were concerns about towing it out to sea because of marine navigation issues, but local government got the appropriate approvals and found a contractor to do just that according to the MHA for Harbour Grace-Port de Grave, Pam Parsons.
“It drew a lot of traffic to the area but, hopefully this is the end of it. It’s sad when marine life becomes entangled in fishing gear in the ocean,” remarked MHA Parsons.
